The British Army has announced that it is opening recruitment to Commonwealth citizens, including Nigerians, starting today, August 19, 2024. The application window will remain open until August 26, 2024.

Applications are being invited for specific roles including musician, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer, Royal Engineers Technician and Tradesman, and paratrooper. This recruitment phase aims to highlight the important contributions that Commonwealth soldiers have made and continue to make within the British Army.

To be considered, applications must be linked to the Recruit Bounty Referral Scheme, which requires a referral from a current British Army member. The only exception is for those applying as musicians, who must meet specific musical standards outlined on the Army Musicians page.

A key aspect of the recruitment process is medical screening for Sickle Cell traits, which are more common among certain populations including those from Commonwealth countries. Having the Sickle Cell Trait itself does not disqualify candidates. However, those identified as higher risk will need to undergo additional diagnostic blood testing before participating in the required entry fitness assessments. This extra step ensures the safety of all recruits.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria varies between soldier and officer roles:

Soldiers
– Minimum age of 16 years old (can start application at 15 years 7 months, assessment at 15 years 9 months)
– Under 17.5 years old attend the Army Foundation College first
– Must enlist before age 36

Officers
– Between 18-29 years old (some specialist roles like doctors have higher age limits, case-by-case over 30)
– Need 35 ALIS points from 7 subjects (minimum C/4 in English, Maths, and Science/foreign language)
– Need 72 UCAS points from 3 subjects

Fitness Requirements

All applicants must pass a series of fitness tests, including the Multistage Fitness Test (beep test), Seated Ball Throw, and Mid Thigh Pull. The Army provides guidance on reaching the required fitness level. Quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and meeting BMI requirements are emphasized.

Other Considerations

Tattoos are allowed if not offensive, obscene or visible in passport photo. Hand and neck tattoos are permitted, but not on head or face. Piercings that alter appearance may disqualify. Criminal convictions must be disclosed, even if considered “spent.”

Application Timeline

The strict application window is August 19 – August 26, 2024. Candidates must be available to travel to the UK for further assessment in October/November 2024. Basic training would begin between January – March 2025.

For those too young to apply, the Army Cadet Force provides an opportunity to get involved in military-style activities and gain skills and qualifications.

Interested candidates should visit the official British Army recruitment page for full details and to apply.
