Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Maman, is set to inaugurate the newly appointed members of the governing councils of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education on Thursday, July 4, 2023.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) disclosed this information in a letter addressed to the heads of federal government-owned institutions.

The institutions have been operating without governing councils since President Bola Tinubu’s sweeping dissolution of the councils last June. This decision led to industrial unrest at the University of Abuja, where members of the academic union, ASUU, accused the management of making decisions reserved for the council.

In May, ASUU declared a two-week ultimatum for the government to reinstate councils whose tenure had not yet expired and to reconstitute those whose tenure had elapsed. The education ministry subsequently published a list of approved council members for the 111 tertiary institutions. However, the inauguration was postponed after President Tinubu ordered a review of the list due to criticism that it did not adhere to federal character regulations.

Two weeks ago, the ministry released a revised list of governing council members. The inauguration will take place at the NUC headquarters in Abuja, followed immediately by a retreat for the newly appointed councils. Due to limited space at the venue, only Vice-Chancellors and Registrars are invited to accompany their respective council members to the inauguration.

The NUC has asked the institutions to handle travel and accommodation arrangements for their council members. The inauguration of the new governing councils is expected to bring stability and proper governance to Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
