The Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Retail Limited (NNPC Retail Ltd), Mr. Huub Stokman, has assured Nigerians that the current fuel scarcity and the consequent long queues would reduce in Lagos on or before the weekend.

He also said that other states, because they are further away from Lagos, will witness the end of the queues and scarcity a few days after the weekend.

He assured that the company and other stakeholders are doing everything possible to bring to an end the scarcity and stop the sufferings of Nigerians as result of the fuel crisis.

He spoke yesterday during a virtual media conference organised by the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN).

He said: “There are 300 million litres coming into shore this week which is more than we normally get. Tomorrow, we keep loading in our depots, we will keep loading over the weekend.

My full expectation is that we should see queues in Lagos going down before the end of the week based on the data that we are seeing of vessels coming, the trucks are being loaded.

“If you move out of Lagos, there is always a little bit of trouble. Lagos, of course, is easier because they are close to the depot.

For others, it might take a couple of days longer but we will see very quickly the rest of the country to have stabilisation.”

Stokman, who is also MEMAN Chairman, during the briefing titled: ‘Reducing queues at retail outlets’, said that the association deeply empathised with Nigerians over the current unavailability of fuel and the resultant queues at many retail outlets.

He said: “We can see the frustration and difficulties this situation is creating. The Downstream Regulator, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and other key stakeholders across the supply chain are fully engaged and supportive to eliminate the queues as swiftly as possible.

“Our partners in the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) have assured us of their support in ensuring the product gets to the retail outlets safely and quickly.

We also will extend the opening times of selected retail outlets to ensure we can service our customers as long and as safely possible. Independent marketers (depots & stations) are being allocated additional PMS to alleviate the situation.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC ltd) has raised the alarm that some people were taking advantage of the scarcity to exploit Nigerians. Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Ltd, Olufemi Soneye, speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos also disclosed that the company has more than 1.5 billion litres of fuel in stock, sufficient to last for at least 30 days.

Speaking also during the MEMAN media briefing, the association’s Chief Executive Officer and Executive Secretary, Mr. Clement Isong, urged Nigerians to report to them MEMAN members who exploited the scarcity and profiteered.
