*Says Documents Are “Null and Void”

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) has demanded the immediate halt of Central Motor Registry Information System (CMRIS) certificates being issued by the Nigeria Police Force.

In a strongly-worded letter to the Inspector General of Police on January 29th, the lawyers’ association condemned reports of police extorting vehicle owners to register and obtain the CMRIS certificates for at least 6,000 naira. Several vehicle owners have allegedly been forced to pay the fees.

Questioning the legal validity of the tracking certificates, NBA-SPIDEL called the police’s actions “illegal” and told the IGP to immediately stop issuance of CMRIS certificates. They also demanded that the CMRIS website and physical registration centers be shut down.

The lawyers gave the police 3 days to refund all monies collected from vehicle owners. Failure to meet the demands within 7 days would compel NBA-SPIDEL to seek sanctions through the courts against the IGP’s office, the letter warned.

They also demanded refunds within three days for all funds extracted from Nigerians under this scheme estimated to be at least 6,000 naira each.

The police have yet to publicly respond to the demands regarding the discontinuation of the contentious CMRIS certificates that have raised the ire of legal advocates and everyday motorists alike. The saga threatens to spark a new controversy over allegations of systemic police overreach and extortion.
