The Nigerian Law School has increased its tuition fee to N476,000 for students admitted for the 2023/2024 session, representing nearly a 200% hike.

This was disclosed in a circular signed by the Law School’s Director-General, Isa Chiroma, and obtained on Thursday. The astronomical increment comes amid economic hardship following the removal of fuel subsidies by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The new fee represents a significant jump from around N296,000 previously paid by Law School students. The hike has sparked outrage given the tough economic realities facing millions of Nigerians.

President Tinubu had announced an end to the decade-long fuel subsidy in May 2023, citing budgetary concerns. However, the policy has led to rising costs of goods and services, with many citizens struggling under abject poverty.

Critics argue the near tripling of Law School fees is untenable for aspiring lawyers from poor backgrounds hoping to complete their training. There are concerns the move could further limit access to the legal profession.
