A Nigerian man wanted for the alleged murder of a 21-year-old female undergraduate student in Oyo State has been arrested in Sierra Leone.

Best Nnanyereugo Benjamin was apprehended on Friday night at a club in Freetown by Sierra Leonean police. He had been declared wanted in Nigeria on October 10th for the July 13th killing of Miss Augusta Oseodion Onuwabhagbe, a student at Lead City University in Ibadan.

According to sources, Benjamin fled Nigeria after the murder and had been active on social media using the victim’s phone. A concerned citizen in Sierra Leone who noticed his activity online informed the deceased’s mother. She then reached out to her lawyer, Chief Femi Falana, who helped contact Sierra Leonean authorities.

The suspect had changed his name to Kanu Princeton Samuel and obtained a Sierra Leonean passport on July 28th, just 15 days after the alleged murder. He was tracked down and arrested during a nightclub raid in Freetown. Benjamin is currently being detained by local police while awaiting extradition to Nigeria.

The brutal killing of the 21-year-old student, whom Benjamin claimed to be his girlfriend, sparked outrage in Nigeria. Police say the suspect will face justice for the heinous crime.
