Vice President Kashim Shettima has responded to speculations regarding Nigeria’s membership in the BRICS economic bloc, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Following the announcement of six new member countries being admitted to BRICS – Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE – questions arose about Nigeria’s absence from the list.

Shettima addressed this matter, clarifying that Nigeria had not applied for BRICS membership.

In a statement made on Friday during the BRICS Summit held in South Africa, Shettima explained, “So far, we have not applied for the membership of BRICS. And it is majorly informed by the fact that my principal, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a true democrat that believes in consensus building.” He emphasized the need to consider various variables and engage with advisory bodies such as the economic advisory council, Federal Executive Council, and the National Assembly before making an informed decision about joining BRICS.

As Nigeria’s representative at the summit, Shettima also directed a message to Nigerians residing in South Africa. He urged them to abide by local laws and show respect for the host citizens in their places of residence.

The recently admitted countries are set to become full BRICS members starting from January 1. Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the significance of this expansion, stating, “This membership expansion is historic… It will bring new vigor to the BRICS cooperation mechanism and further strengthen the force for world peace and development.”

Leaders from the newly admitted countries expressed their enthusiasm about joining the bloc. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed referred to it as “a great moment” for his nation, while Iranian senior presidential advisor Mohammad Jamshidi characterized the move as a “historic development and a strategic success” for Tehran’s foreign policy. Egypt and the UAE also expressed readiness to collaborate within the BRICS framework, which represents a significant portion of the world’s population and economic power.
