Protests by APC members including Governor Yahaya Bello and Senator Florence Ita-Giwa stalled the inauguration of new National Working Committee (NWC) members. The aggrieved members from Cross Rivers and Kogi protested the alleged removal of their nominees.

Six NWC officers were set to be inaugurated but the ceremony was disrupted. On Wednesday, the NWC had approved candidates to fill vacant positions – Ali Bukar Dalori, Garba Datti Muhammad, Prof. AbdulKarim Abubakar Kana, Donatus Nwankpa, Mary Alile Idele and Duro Meseko.

However, Minister Betta Edu objected to replacing Dr. Stella Odey-Ekpo with Mary Alile Idele as National Women Leader. Governor Bello also protested Duro Meseko’s inclusion instead of his Kogi nominee as Deputy National Publicity Secretary.

Bello waited for hours to see the Chairman, insisting the issue gets resolved immediately. The Kogi APC chairman rejected the NWC’s announced replacements. Cross Rivers women protesters were also barred from the secretariat over the National Women Leader slot.

Later, Governor Bello, Senator Ita-Giwa and the Cross Rivers APC Chairman went to the National Chairman’s residence to press their demands. Reportedly, Bello said he will forward a new Kogi West Senatorial Zone nominee.

The inauguration ceremony was postponed amid the protests over NWC candidates. The aggrieved APC members aim to get their preferred nominees approved instead of the NWC’s current picks.
