Former Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Worgu Boms, has thrown his weight behind calls on Chief Wole Olanikpekun, SAN, to recuse himself as Chairman of the Body of Benchers; given its supervisory role over the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee [LPDC].

Boms noted that contrary to speculations and counterclaims, the authorization of the now infamous letter is yet to form an issue, and should naturally not arise at this point. Noting that the contention at this point is whether Olanikpekun as Chairman of the Body of Benchers- a body conferred with the power to appoint judges/persons to the LPDC, can do so in a disciplinary petition of misconduct involving a law firm wherein he Is a partner.

Boms noted that the indictment against the learned silk is enormous especially based on the alluding and presupposition that Olanikpekun can cahoot with Judges in procuring favorable outcomes.

According to the ex-Attorney General, “that Chief Wole Olanikpekun, SAN, did not authorize the letter, (or) was not aware of its writing…” does not form part of the issue at this time.

“He is the chairman of the Body of Benchers which appoints Judges who hear disciplinary matters like this one. He cannot remain in that position that appoints those who will Judge the matter in which himself is alleged to have been using his influence in cahoots with Judges to be procuring judgment.”

The former justice commissioner further insisted that Olanikpekun stays off “for as long as the proceedings concerning the issue last and until determined” noting that the allegations against Chief Olanikpekun are very serious and the facts are obvious.

The Rivers AG further noted that anything short of the stepping aside of Chief Olanikpenkun will amount to self-inflicted harm on the legal profession with posterity being the focus.

Boms earlier noted that Olanikpekun and Ajumogobia had during a UNILAG Alumni function discussed the matter, before the “Infamous letter” written by Ogunde, a partner in the law firm of Wole Olanikpekun & Co.

According to Boms, “The letter was written directly to the clients of Ajumogobia, without his knowledge or any formal copy on him or his firm. Noting that but for the intervention of the client, the scheme would have succeeded.

Recall that since the request on the Chairman of the Body of Benchers to recuse himself from the Body, there has been disquiet within various quarters of the legal profession both in favor and against the actions.
