*Says National Judicial Council Must Investigate Allegations Made By 14 Apex Court Justices Notwithstanding Tanko Mohammed’s Resignation
*Says It Is NJC Not National Assembly That Can Investigate Supreme Court

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata has said that the Nigerian Bar Association is not in support of a National Assembly investigation into the allegations levelled against the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Tanko Mohammed by 14 Justices of the Court in a memo which was leaked to the public.

Akpata also noted that it beckons on the National Judicial Council to take up an investigation into the matter stating that nobody no matter how highly placed should be allowed to get away with any form of impropriety.

Speaking at the sidelines of the ongoing NBA Section on Legal Practice annual summit holding in Asaba, Akpata told our correspondent  “Reading that letter, we saw that money meant for judges or justices of the court was not being used for their welfare and other things that had to do with the courts. Our position is that nobody, no matter how highly placed should be allowed to get away with any form of impropriety.

Akpata continued: “Now we expect the National Judicial Council to take steps to investigate the matter.

He further stated that the Nigerian Bar Association does not support the National Assembly investigating the judiciary and its the NJC that should rightfully look into the allegations.

Akpata stressed that as one of the Federal Courts, allegations from 14 Justices must be looked into to get to the root of it. He emphasised that nobody should be treated as a sacred cow if found wanting after investigations.

“The Supreme Court is one of the federal courts in Nigeria. If you have 14 Justices making allegations against someone, look into it and get to the bottom of it.

I am a lawyer, and I cannot arrive at any conclusions until we get to the bottom of the matter but nobody should be should be a sacred cow. Nobody should be allowed to get away in the event that they are guilty of any malfeasance or any anything of that sort.” He said.
