Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum had donated N20 million to the family of the late Brig.-Gen. Dzarma Zirkushu, who was killed in an ambush laid for troops in Chibok by Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents.

He announced the gesture when he led a delegation on a condolence visit to the bereaved family at the Ribadu Cantonment in Kaduna, Kaduna State.

Zulum’s spokesman, Malam Isa Gusau, said in a statement that the pledge was immediately redeemed as support to members of the late General’s family.

In a statement, Gusau added that such gesture will be extended to families of the soldiers who died alongside General.

Zulum was received at the airport by Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, and Garrison Commander of the Nigerian Army’s One Division, Brigadier General T. Opuene.

The governor was accompanied by Borno’s three Senators – Kashim Shettima, Mohammed Ali Ndume and Abubakar Kyari; Borno State APC Chairman Ali Bukar Dalori and two House of the Representatives members – Dr. Haruna Mshelia and Ahmad Jaha.

The House of Representatives members represented Chibok where the late Gen Zirkushu was commanding the 28 Task Force Brigade and Askira-Uba, which was attacked by the insurgents last week.

The Borno governor had audience with the widow, Mrs. Blessing Zirkushu and her five children, after being received by Mr. Gurdebil Zirkushu, a brother to the late General among other family members.

After extending condolences, Zulum urged them to take solace in the heroic legacy left behind Gen. Zirkushu, adding that the people of Borno will remain eternally grateful for the sacrifice of the late General and other soldiers who were killed fighting against insurgents.

Also yesterday, the Kaduna State Government announced the donation of N2 million to support the late General’s family.

Internal Security and Home Affairs Commissioner, who announced the donation, said Kaduna’s support was to compliment Borno in reaching out to the late General’s bereaved family.

Brig.-Gen Opuene, who spoke on behalf of the family and the Nigerian Army, appreciated the governor for the visit, describing Zulum as a compassionate leader whose support for the military is known to everyone.

In September last year, the Borno governor donated N20 million to support the widow and orphans of the late Col. Dahiru Chiroma Bako, who died from wounds sustained while battling Boko Haram insurgents.

Col. Bako was Commander of 25 Task Force Brigade of then “Operation Lafiya Dole” in charge of Damboa and the surrounding axis in southern Borno.
