The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Leo Irabor, has expressed concern over the lingering security challenges facing the country and called for the review of the national defence policy at least every five years to address the emerging challenge.

Irabor said the Defence Headquarters had included experienced retired personnel in an elite team of experts to evaluate changing conditions in the country and provide solutions to their associated security threats.
According to him, this was part of a policy to combat specific security situations such as kidnapping, banditry and secessionist activities among other security threats.
The CDS spoke at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Plateau State, during a lecture for participants of the Senior Executive Course 43/2021.
His lecture was titled, ‘Implementation of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Joint Defence Doctrine and national security in Nigeria: issues and challenges.’
He expressed optimism that the implementation of a joint defence doctrine was a sure way to victory over insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crimes bedevilling Nigeria, pointing out that a joint logistics management board, when established, would take into consideration all the intricate details involved in supporting operations and mitigate the challenge of equipment incompatibility for effective interoperability in joint operations.
The CDS said, “Nigeria is facing various internal security challenges such as terrorism, cattle rustling and herdsmen/farmers clashes as well as cultism, agitations and secessionist activities and militancy, amongst others. The need for the establishment of Defence Logistics Management Board at DHQ to coordinate issues of joint logistics management has become imperative.
“The DLMB would comprise the chief of defence logistics, services chiefs of logistics, representatives of MOD as well as other stakeholders that would be involved in the logistics planning process during procurement of jointly used equipment for joint operation. This would address the challenge of incompatibility of equipment, facilitate interoperability, minimise wastage, and ultimately ensure effective implementation of the JDD for enhanced national security in Nigeria.”
