Police to get new DIGs this week

Our correspondent learnt that the inauguration of the PMT was being delayed because the acting IG, Muhammed Adamu, had yet to nominate eligible officers for promotion and appointment into the management of the force. A source at the PSC said the agency had not received official communication from the new police boss as at the close of work on Friday, adding that Adamu might send his nominees to the commission this week. Our correspondent had reported that four DIGs who are members of the Police Management Team under former IG, Ibrahim Idris, might be forced out of the service to pave way for Adamu to set up a new management team to work with. But Our correspondent on Saturday gathered that some of the DIGs might be willing to work with Adamu to stave off retirement. It was further learnt that DIGs Maigari Dikko in Charge of Department of Finance and Administration; Joshak Habila, Department of Operations; Emmanuel Inyang, Information and Communication Technology and Agboola Oshodi -Glover, Logistics and Supply, have not shown any indication that they wished to leave the service. A source said, “The DIGs were fully dressed in their uniforms on the day the former IG was handing over to his successor. Ordinarily, if they had planned to leave with Idris, they would have been in mufti, but their body language showed they are not willing to retire now unless forced to by the acting IG.” Following this development, our correspondent gathered that Adamu might consider keeping them in service “as long as they demonstrate commitment and loyalty to him.” Meanwhile, the police authorities have been meeting with other security agencies to tackle the pre-election violence which dogged political rallies in parts of the country in the past weeks. Our correspondent gathered that the heads of security agencies met with the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, in Abuja on Friday, to strategise on how to check the spiraling incidents. Titi, wife of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was on Friday evening attacked by suspected political thugs at Sarkin Sasa house in Ojoo area of Ibadan, Oyo State. The thugs reportedly attacked her convoy, destroying some vehicles and injuring some persons. Commenting on the development on Saturday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said the Police High Command was worried by the campaign violence, noting that the police planned to synergise with Nigeria Customs, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Department of State Services, to address cross-border arms smuggling and proliferation. Mba said, “Stockpiling of arms is an issue the police planned to address. We can’t tackle pre-election and electoral violence without addressing the problem of arms proliferation.”]]>
