Seeking peaceful conduct of the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti, the monarch also cautioned politicians against the misuse of power and rigging He specifically urged the Yoruba to resist any attempt to pitch them against one another over election matters. Oba Ogunwusi spoke at the Ekiti State University during the 23rd convocation ceremony, where he bagged Doctor of Public Administration (honoris causa) of the institution. The Ooni said power belonged to God and that people must be allowed to freely choose who they wanted to succeed Fayose. He said, “We don’t want war in the coming election. We don’t want violence and wanton killings in the name of election. “We don’t want anyone to set the Yoruba race against each other again. Power belongs to God and when it comes to the election, the people have the power to elect their leaders and the power to elect doesn’t belong to the powerful people alone. “So, this time, let the people decide who will lead them. Time has come for us to know that power belongs to God and that He gives it to whoever He likes. We must see and view Ekiti as first in our hearts.” Oba Ogunwusi said the award would motivate him to do more for the university, stressing that he was committed to being part of an initiative put in place by the management to move the institution forward. The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, said his commitment to education propelled him to initiate policies that moved Ekiti forward from its 35th position to the first position in national secondary examinations held in 2016 and 2017 respectively. He said his government had impacted positively on the people’s lives in the areas of agriculture, health and social and human infrastructures, adding that posterity would judge him well as a governor who did exceedingly well for the populace. He described those who were conferred with honourary doctorate degrees as people of integrity, who had contributed to the development of the nation in all spheres. He said, “This University needs a radical turnaround in all spheres. The State Government can’t do it alone. But with the support of the private bodies, we can go places. “We are not used to selling awards here, no our awards are not for sale. But we need people of good minds to contribute to our universities, because I believe there is hope for Nigeria and that hope will come faster if we can invest in education.” The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Samuel Oye Bandele, said the university had decided to shore up its internally generated revenue by embarking on business ventures including bakery and block making, among others. The first Nigerian Registrar of the West African Examinations Council and former Registrar of University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Chief Alex Ajayi, was among other awardees on the occasion.]]>
