Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, 92, has been re-elected for an eighth term, securing 53.7 percent of the vote, according to official results announced by the Constitutional Council on Monday.

Rival candidate and former government minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary came second with 35.2 percent. Two days after the October 12 election, Tchiroma had claimed victory and called for demonstrations, disputing the official count.
Tensions escalated over the weekend when four people were killed on Sunday in clashes between security forces and opposition supporters in Douala, the economic capital, according to the region’s governor. Protesters told AFP that security forces initially deployed tear gas before firing “live ammunition.”
Supporters of Tchiroma, who claimed he won 54.8 percent of the vote against Biya’s 31.3 percent, have taken to the streets since last week to defend his alleged victory.
Analysts had largely expected Biya, the world’s oldest serving head of state, to secure another seven-year term in a system critics describe as increasingly rigged.
Biya is only the second head of state to lead Cameroon since independence from France in 1960. Over his decades in power, he has maintained control through a combination of political repression, suppression of armed opposition, and management of social unrest, economic inequality, and separatist violence.
