The Director General of the Legal Aid Council, Aliyu Bagudu, has advocated for a realistic and more result-oriented solution to the unending problem of awaiting trial inmates as well as care for prisoners in the various prisons across the country.

The Director General said this at an event organised recently by the Federal Justice Sector Reform Coordinating Committee, FJSRCC, to review and plan key justice initiatives and programs for the current administration.

According to Atiku Bagudu, “with the recent information from the Nigeria Correctional Service,  that there are  over 80,000 inmates with over 50,000 of them awaiting trial in the various prisons across the country, there is an urgent and crucial need to deal with the issue of access to justice for these huge number of Nigerians and not forgetting the prisoners who ought to be catered for in accordance with international best practice”.

Bagudu further stated that “Law Review is important but looking at the revelations from the latest budget defense of the Nigeria Correctional Service which puts the feeding cost of an inmate at N750 while that of a dog is N800, there is need for some new initiatives on dealing with the huge number of inmates at our prisons. There is need therefore for some insightful and robust discussions on increased budgetary provisions to promote access to justice and better service delivery for the various institutions in the justice sector. The access-to-justice fund as provided as provided in the Construction should be made operational”.

Also speaking at the event the Special Adviser to the President on Justice Reform in the Office of The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Fernandez Marcus Obiene, emphasized the need for the relevant institutions in the justice sector to resolve policy and operational lapses as well as institutional overlaps in order to ensure that the justice sector plays its crucial role in the economic and political development of the country.

Professor Mohammed Tabiu, SAN, who Co-Chairs the FJSRCC with the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, advised member institutions to prioritize an efficient, effective and coordinated justice delivery system as a key indicator of progress in the sector.

The Director, Planning and Research, Federal Ministry of Justice, Victoria Ojogbane (Mrs) highlighted the need for institutions under the Justice Ministry to collaborate optimally to achieve the mandate of the justice ministry in the as contained President Bola Ahmed Tinubu eight focal areas of governance.

The event which was supported by the Rule of Law (ROLAC) program of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) had in attendance representatives from relevant institutions such as the Police, Correctional Service, anti-corruption agencies, the media and civil society.
