At least 50 farmers have been brutally killed by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Malam Karanti village, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, in yet another wave of violence plaguing the northeastern region of Nigeria.

The massacre occurred on Thursday, approximately 9 kilometers from Baga town, a location known to be under ISWAP control. According to multiple local sources, the victims—mostly farmers and fishermen—were ambushed while working on their farms.

Sources disclosed that the victims had previously been operating under the protection of an ISWAP commander known as Amir Akilu, in exchange for regular levies paid to the terrorist group. The arrangement had allowed relative stability in the area until the deadly betrayal.

“They had papers issued by Amir Akilu, the ISWAP commander overseeing Malam Karanti up to Dawashi. For months, they worked and fished under his protection,” a local source told Daily Trust. “Unfortunately, the terrorists struck when the commander was absent, accusing the farmers of espionage and collaborating with their enemies.”

A survivor of the attack recounted the horror:

“We were already harvesting beans when they surrounded us. They warned that anyone who tried to escape would be shot. Still, some of us decided to run—it was better to try than to die slowly. Over 50 people were slaughtered. Some were taken away. Today, they moved to Dawashi, and there are reports of further killings.”

The attackers reportedly used knives to slaughter most of the victims, intensifying the brutality of the incident. Several others were abducted, though exact figures remain unclear.

As of the time of this report, neither the Nigerian government nor security agencies have issued any official statement regarding the massacre.
