No fewer than 3,074 lawyers have registered for the 2024 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference (NBA-AGC), according to Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya, the Chairperson for this year’s edition of the conference. With just 9 days remaining until the end of the early bird registration period, the conference is set to kick off from August 23 to August 28, 2024.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, Badejo-Okunsanya expressed optimism about the turnout, noting that the current registration figure is a significant improvement compared to the 2,000 lawyers registered during the same period last year. The 64th NBA-AGC, themed “Pressing Forward, A National Posture for Rebuilding Nigeria,” will take place at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, considering the anticipated large number of attendees.

“As of Thursday, we already had 3,074 registered delegates, which is very encouraging,” Badejo-Okunsanya stated. “By June 30, we should see a lot of activities in preparation for the conference, and I am very optimistic that this conference will be mind-blowing.” She added that the excitement surrounding the event is palpable, as Lagos State has always been a special and exciting venue for the conference. Badejo-Okunsanya expressed confidence that everything would work out for the good of the bar.

Despite the optimism surrounding this year’s conference, it is worth recalling the success of last year’s event. The 2023 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference, chaired by Afam Osigwe, SAN, and the planning committee led by Oyinkan Badejo-Okusanya, saw an impressive turnout with approximately 15,000 people registering to attend the conference in person, according to information on the NBA website.

In contrast, this year’s conference has faced a setback due to a boycott by many NBA branches. The boycott is a result of the high registration fees, which do not include any conference materials.

As the early bird registration deadline approaches and the conference dates draw nearer, it remains to be seen how the NBA leadership will address the concerns raised by the boycotting branches to ensure a successful and well-attended Annual General Conference.
