The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, on Friday led 24 other lawmakers elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to defect to the Accord Party.

The mass defection occurred following a closed-door meeting at the Assembly complex in Osogbo, leaving only one member the sole All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker remaining in the opposition within the 26-member House.

The move is widely seen as a strategic effort to consolidate Governor Ademola Adeleke’s political base ahead of the Osun State governorship election, now scheduled for August 15, 2026 (following a minor adjustment by the Independent National Electoral Commission from the original August 8 date).

Governor Adeleke himself defected from the PDP to the Accord Party in December 2025, announcing on December 9 that he had formally joined on November 6 as a platform to pursue re-election and advance his welfare-focused agenda amid internal PDP challenges.

Confirming the development, the Speaker’s spokesperson, Olamide Tiamiyu, stated that the 25 PDP-elected lawmakers have now joined the Accord Party, with further details to be provided in due course.

The defection aligns the state legislature with the governor’s new political vehicle, potentially strengthening Accord’s position in the state as the party prepares for the governorship race. This comes amid ongoing political realignments in Osun, where the PDP has faced significant shifts since the governor’s exit.

The Accord Party now controls the governorship and holds a commanding majority in the House of Assembly, positioning it favorably for the 2026 polls. No immediate reactions were available from the PDP or APC leadership regarding the latest development.
