Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that the defection of some state governors to rival political parties will not hinder Nigerians from electing leaders of their choice in the 2027 general elections.

El-Rufai made the remark on Wednesday at the opening of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Contact and Mobilization Office in Jos, Plateau State.

Speaking at the event, the former governor said that while some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors are switching to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ordinary Nigerians are “defecting to the ADC,” which he described as the party capable of uniting Plateau State and the nation.

According to him, Nigeria is facing difficult times, but there remains hope for a turnaround under a new kind of leadership.

He recalled his personal connection to Plateau State, noting that he frequently visited Jos 40 years ago because his fiancée served there during her National Youth Service Corps programme.

“Since then, things have gone in the wrong direction in Jos and Plateau,” he said. “I hope with better leadership at the state and national levels, we will unite the people of Plateau across ethnic and religious lines so the state can return to being the Home of Peace and Tourism that we have known it to be.”

El-Rufai maintained that Nigerians are exhausted by the APC and PDP, insisting that only fresh leadership can reposition the country.

“I know everyone is tired of this APC and PDP government across Nigeria. Governors from PDP are defecting to APC, but Nigerians are defecting to ADC,” he said. “By God’s grace, 230 million Nigerians will defeat 25 governors.”

He added that Nigerians have already made up their minds to support ADC in 2027, urging party members to unite, field credible candidates, and present policies that would benefit citizens.

“ADC is the only party that reserved 40 percent of leadership positions for the youth and 35 percent for women. It is a party for young people and women,” he stated.

Also speaking, the Plateau State ADC Coordinator, Hon. Jamilu Lawandi Datti, highlighted the challenges confronting young Nigerians, including unemployment, insecurity, and poor access to education and healthcare. He urged them to rally behind ADC as a credible alternative.
