Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Dr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, has distanced himself and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc from recent claims made by a group loyal to Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, which endorsed President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 general elections.

Reacting through his media aide, Muhammed Bello Doka, Malami described the statements credited to Al-Makura’s group as a personal agenda that does not represent the collective position of the CPC bloc—former President Muhammadu Buhari’s original political platform before the merger that birthed the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“When you say CPC bloc, one needs to know who they are referring to,” Malami said, questioning the legitimacy of those speaking on behalf of the group. “Is it the likes of Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Adamu Adamu, Bello Masari, and Faruku Adamu Aliyu—individuals who, just months ago, were openly criticizing Buhari in a bid to gain political relevance?”

He argued that the purported endorsement of Tinubu and ruling out of defection by Al-Makura’s group was a personal move aimed at gaining political favour, and should not be mistaken for a unified CPC bloc decision.

Addressing the speculation around his alleged defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Malami dismissed the rumour as baseless. “Malami is a prominent figure in Nigeria. He cannot defect to any party in secret,” Doka stated. “He remains in the APC but is currently engaged in broad consultations. Until those consultations are concluded, any talk of defection or political declaration is premature.”

Doka reaffirmed Malami’s commitment to active politics, saying the former Minister will announce his next political steps at the appropriate time. “He has every right to belong to any political party and to contest any position in Kebbi State.”

It would be recalled that former governors Umaru Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa), Bello Masari (Katsina), and former Minister of Education Adamu Adamu, along with 20 others, recently issued a communique affirming their loyalty to the APC and President Tinubu’s administration.

The communique read in part: “We, the undersigned leaders and committed members of the former CPC, who were instrumental in the historic merger that gave birth to the APC, hereby clarify our unalloyed loyalty to our great party and express firm solidarity with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.”

This followed concerns raised after APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, led a delegation to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna to appeal to CPC-aligned members not to exit the party. Buhari, in response, reportedly stated that every citizen has the right to join any political party of their choice.
