A former federal lawmaker and ex-PDP governorship candidate in Kogi State, Senator Dino Melaye, has declared that the 2027 general elections will be a battle between suffering Nigerians and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Melaye made the assertion on Friday while appearing as a guest on Politics Today, a political programme aired by Channels Television. He criticised the current administration, saying Nigeria is experiencing unprecedented levels of hardship under President Bola Tinubu.

“We are in a precarious situation in this country, like we have never been. It has never been this disastrous, it has never been this terrible,” Melaye lamented. “The hunger in this country is chartered; people are dying of malnutrition in rural communities. People are now visiting garbage centres to look for food crumbs.”

He added that even simple acts of food distribution in villages have become dangerous due to desperation. “Just announce that you want to share bags of rice in your village. If you’re not careful, there will be casualties due to the struggle to get one or two tins of rice,” he said.

Melaye, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), described the ruling APC as rudderless and accused it of pushing the country into economic and social collapse.

He also took aim at the PDP, describing it as a mere extension of the APC. According to him, the opposition party has failed in its duty to hold the government accountable.

“The PDP has been purchased by the APC. It is now a parastatal and a department of the APC. In fact, they take dates for their NEC and NWC meetings from the Villa,” he alleged.

Melaye expressed disappointment with the conduct of PDP governors, whom he said no longer act like members of the opposition.

“Just look at the number of governors in the PDP today. Are they acting like opposition governors? They’re merely holding forth for the APC,” he claimed.

Citing a recent interview by former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, Melaye further questioned the credibility of opposition voices within the PDP. “He said if we could tolerate Buhari for eight years, then we should tolerate Tinubu for another four. Is that the voice of an opposition figure?” he asked.

Senator Melaye concluded by affirming that the ADC remains a distinct political force and that his move was driven by a commitment to stand with Nigerians facing hardship, not for political convenience.
