*Warns Aspirants Against Premature Campaigning, Vows To Disqualify Violators

The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a free and fair election for the Association’s national officers, scheduled for July.

The Chairman of the Committee, Oluseun Abimbola SAN, made this declaration during the opening of nomination envelopes for candidates aspiring to be elected as National Officers and General Council of the Bar Members.

According to Abimbola, SAN, the committee received approximately 50 submissions for various offices, including the General Council of the Bar. The Committee diligently reviewed each form submitted by prospective candidates (PC) or their agents, ensuring that the documents met the requirements on the checklist. In cases where issues arose regarding dates, receipts, or nominators’ compliance, the Committee allowed the PC or agent to address the concerns raised.

Abimbola emphasized that the exercise was solely to open the submissions and not to screen candidates. He assured aspirants and their representatives that access to the back end of the voting system would be granted to those who require it, ensuring transparency throughout the process.

The Chairman also warned aspirants that campaigning is prohibited until an aspirant is officially declared as a candidate. He stressed that the committee is bound by the Association’s Constitution and will not hesitate to disqualify candidates who violate ECNBA directives.

Prospective candidates and their agents who were present at the event commended the Committee’s transparency, fairness, and expressed confidence in the Committee’s ability to deliver on its mandate.

The ECNBA’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process is a testament to the Nigerian Bar Association’s dedication to promoting good governance and leadership within the legal profession.
