The Lagos State Government has debunked an online publication claiming that the state’s Tenancy Law has been updated to better protect tenants and regulate landlord practices.
In a statement issued on Thursday, May 23, 2025, the Special Adviser on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare Esq, clarified that the report is false and did not originate from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA).
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Lagos State Government wishes to state unequivocally that the said publication did not emanate from LASRERA,” the statement read.
According to the government, the current Tenancy Law enacted in 2015 remains in force. However, a bill proposing amendments to the law is currently under consideration by the Lagos State House of Assembly and has not yet been passed into law.
The statement also noted that the Ministry of Housing is actively engaging key stakeholders in the real estate and housing sectors as part of the review process. These include professional practitioners, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Community Development Committees (CDC), Community Development Associations (CDA), and traditional rulers across the five IBILE divisions of the state.
The engagements, according to Odunuga-Bakare, aim to address issues such as monthly rent payments and the broader need for transparency in real estate transactions.
“The public will be duly informed when the new Tenancy Bill is passed into law,” the Special Adviser assured.
The government urged Lagos residents and the general public to disregard the misleading online report and rely only on verified channels for official information regarding real estate regulations in the state.
