A tanker fire in Majia Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has resulted in the loss of 147 lives and left numerous others injured. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported the tragedy in a statement released on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

According to NEMA’s Kano Territorial Office (KTO), the disaster unfolded when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and spilled its contents at approximately 11:30 p.m. on October 15. The resulting fire quickly spread, leading to significant casualties and property damage.

The Emergency Response Team of NEMA KTO responded to a distress call from the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) at about 5:00 a.m. on October 16.

In the aftermath of the incident, survivors with varying degrees of injuries were rushed to several medical facilities in the region, including Ringim, Hadejia, and Jahun General Hospitals, as well as the Federal Medical Centre in Birnin Kudu.

NEMA’s statement highlighted the collaborative effort in the emergency response, mentioning the involvement of multiple stakeholders such as the Jigawa State Fire Service, Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps (NCDSC), Nigerian Red Cross Society, World Health Organization (WHO), and Jamaatu Nasrul Islam.
