The Benue State government has confirmed a distressing incident in which 10 passengers were abducted from two Benue Links transport vehicles near Okene, Kogi State. These passengers were en route to Lagos on Sunday when the abduction occurred.

Fortunately, the government has also reported that 20 individuals, including two drivers and 18 passengers who were on the same trip, reached their respective destinations safely in Lagos.

The kidnappers have established contact with the families of the abducted passengers and have demanded an undisclosed ransom for their release.

Barr. Omale Omale, the Commissioner for Power, Energy, and Transport in Benue State, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation with reporters in Makurdi. He stated that the state government has taken swift action by reaching out to the Benue State Police Command to collaborate with their counterparts in Kogi State. The goal is to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped victims.

Omale reassured the public that no lives were lost during the incident. Through the efforts of local vigilantes and the police, both buses, two drivers, and 18 passengers were secured. On September 11, 2023, the police certified the psychological fitness of the remaining passengers and released them, allowing them to continue their journey to Lagos.

However, 10 passengers remain in the kidnappers’ custody. These criminals took four individuals from one of the buses and six from the other.

The Acting General Manager of Benue Links provided the government with a detailed report of the incident, and the authorities are actively working to secure the release of the remaining victims. The kidnappers have made ransom demands, but the government is committed to ensuring the safe return of the abducted passengers to their families unharmed.

Commissioner Omale urged prospective passengers not to be deterred by safety concerns, emphasizing that Benue Links is dedicated to providing the best security and protection for its travelers. While acknowledging security challenges across the country, he assured passengers that the state government would collaborate with other states to prioritize passenger welfare and security during their journeys.
