[A video showing a young lawyer named Olakunle Karimu being assaulted by men of Nigerian Police on the instruction of his former employer has gone viral on social media.

According to the report received by TheNigerialawyer, Mr. Karimu had only gone to meet his former employer, Mr. Oluyomi Olawore to open the cheque he issued to him (Karimu).

Oluyomi Olawore

Mr. Karimu’s friend who is also a lawyer, and was around when the incident occurred, informed TheNigerialawyer (TNL) on how the incident occurred:

Below reads his story:

“Olakunle was told to stop work without prior notice, as their contract of employment stated that 15 days’ notice will be issued, but Mr. Oluyomi Olawore terminated the employment.

Olakunle said since this was the case, the boss should give him his tax remittance as well as his salary for that month which the principal accepted.

The boss then issued a cheque for one month salary and also told him that the cheque will be ready by Friday 29th June, 2018.

Upon trying to cash the cheque, Olakunle was informed by the banker that the cheque was not opened and it has to be signed by the person who issued the cheque.

Olakunle returned to his former office to get the cheque opened, but was denied entry. He then passed the information to the secretary who then informed Mr. Oluyomi Olawore, but he refused to sign the cheque.

When he finally made his way to the office, he insisted that Mr. Oluyomi Olawore should sign the cheque so that he could cash it that day as that was the last work day of the week as well as of the month. But rather than signing the cheque, Oluyomi Olawore sent one of his employees to go call the police on the grounds that he was being held hostage in his office and that his life was under threat.

On arrival, the police without enquiring from Oluyomi Olawore started harassing him physically. The attention of Oluyomi Olawore was eventually drawn to what was happening, he then instructed the police officers to stop the assault, claiming he never asked them to assault him. Thereafter, the cheque was finally signed by Oluyomi Olawore.”

In a chat with Mr. Olakunle in the early hours of today, he informed TheNigerialawyer (TNL) that he was going to petition NBA Lagos against his ex-employer.

As at the time of filing this report, Mr, Olakunle is yet to send the copy of the petition to us.
