The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen has called for the removal of the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) from the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Justice Onnoghen made the call on Saturday during the dinner to mark the 40th anniversary of the Nigeria Law School Class of 78 in Abuja. He said when he was growing up the office of the AGF was actually under the DPP because the department had competent persons for prosecuting offenders. He regretted that what obtained in the past where the DPP received files from the police legal department and examined them to determine if all the ingredients and facts to proof a case were there and direct them on what to do, is no more. “If you separate it, you should still strengthen that department get in those with the expertise; those who can prosecute; they have that training,” he said. “I am calling on this class, please let them be talking, those who are in a position to talk, please talk let us try to bring back some of these things in order to make Nigeria better for our children.”]]>
