At the resumed hearing before the FCT Chief Judge, Ishaq Bello, on Wednesday, one of the Defendants, Nicholas Zakaria , Assistant Inspector of Police (1) gave his defence. The police officers standing trial in the case are; Danjuma Ibrahim (first defendant), Othman Abdulsalami (2nd defendant, now at large), Nicholas Zakaria (third defendant), Ezekiel Acheneje (fourth defendant), Baba Emmanuel (fifth defendant) and Sadiq Salami (6 defendant). They are charged with culpable homicide for allegedly killing Ifeanyi Ozor, Chinedu Meniru, Isaac Ekene, Paulinus Ogbonna, Anthony Nwodike and Augustina Arebun. Mr. Zakaria in his evidence, led by his counsel, Mohammed Tola, denied having anything to do with the killing of the two remaining victims. The two victims were the surviving ones among the six, and were allegedly killed later. He also said that at his rank as an ASP 1, he was not allowed to use an AK47, only pistol. The prosecution counsel, Mamman Usman, during cross-examination, insisted that the fifth accused, Baba Emmanuel, was among the team that shot the lady. Mr. Zakaria insisted he did not know and did not see him shoot the lady and that junior officers like Mr. Emmanuel were not allowed to carry arms. (NAN)]]>
