The All Progressives Congress has called an emergency meeting of its National Working Committee to discuss the Supreme Court judgement on the contentious Zamfara State elections in Abuja on Monday.

According to sources, the ruling party is shocked at the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission to declare the Peoples Democratic Party the winner of the elections after the apex court’s ruling.

One of our correspondents learnt that the National Chairman of the APC, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, would preside over the meeting.

However, it was not clear if the party would sanction some of its members whose actions cost the APC what a national officer of the party described as a “monumental loss”.

The source said what happened in Zamfara was avoidable, saying members of the party in the state needed to know that their actions were responsible for the embarrassment the judgement brought to the ruling party.

He lamented that the APC had been weakened at the National Assembly and the state.

The source said, “Even in the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, our strength has reduced. The North-West is strategic and I can tell you that the judgment will affect our membership in the zone.”

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Lanre Issa-Onilu, who confirmed Monday’s meeting, declined comments on the likely punishments for the members who worked against their party in Zamfara.

However, he said the party would make its stand known on the Zamfara elections after the meeting.

Issa-Onilu said, “It is true we are meeting on the outcome of the Supreme Court decision on Zamafara State elections and the decision taken on it by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday. After the meeting, we will make our position known.”
