Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has asserted that the Northern State governors cannot move against President Bola Tinubu, whom they played a significant role in bringing to office.

His comments come amidst growing controversy over the recent tax reform bill sent to the National Assembly by the Tinubu administration.

The Northern Governors’ Forum, chaired by Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa, recently rejected the tax reform bill in a communiqué. The proposed legislation seeks to change the name of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and provide Value Added Tax (VAT) exemptions for certain sectors.

In a meeting held at the Government House in Kaduna on Monday, the Northern Governors and Traditional Rulers Council urged the National Assembly to “oppose any bill that can jeopardise the well-being of our people.”

However, Governor Sule, during an interview on Channels Television, emphasized that the Northern governors cannot turn against President Tinubu after heavily supporting his election. “We picked an item in that bill and that item is concerning VAT, nobody is against anything. We are talking about the sharing formula of the VAT,” Sule clarified.

The Nasarawa State Governor further explained that the Northern governors are seeking fairness in the distribution of VAT revenue. “What we said clearly is that we want fairness in the distribution of the VAT. If we go the way it is, we are going to say it will be unfair to some other states in the South,” he stated.

The tax reform bill, forwarded by President Tinubu to the Senate and House of Representatives on October 3, 2024, has sparked a debate between the Northern region and the federal government. As deliberations continue, the outcome of this controversial legislation remains to be seen.
