On the 9th of October, 2019,all the 192 members of the Universal Postal Union(UPU) will be cerebrating its 50th anniversary.

The World Post Day was initiated in the year 1969 during the Tokyo Congress by the Minister of the German Post;He inch Von Stephen.Congress is the supreme authority of the organisation and meets every four years.

According to the Zonal Regional Legal Adviser, Mrs. Zikachat Ruth Kaburuk-Badung this is a day set aside to increase awareness of the laudable achievements of Postal Administrations of the UPU.

“The Universal Postal Union (UPU) is one of the oldest specialized agency of the United Nations (UN)that was established in the year 1874 in Berne the capital of Switzerland.

“With one of its cardinal objectives to ensure that mail could be delivered anywhere on earth at the reasonable prices.The UPU is thus the regulatory body of all Posts.

The theme for this year ‘s celebration is “145Years Delivery Development ”

She also stated that from the above theme, the UPU has effectively achieved delivery development in these ten areas for of its existence:-
1. Guaranteeing the single Postal Territory
2. Linking Networks.
3.Improving Quality of Service
4. Driving Socio-Economic Development
5. Facilitating Trade
6. Improving Access to Postal Services.
7.Working to Reform the sector.
8.Developing Markets.
9. Supporting Sustainable Development
10.Coordinating with International Partners.

“Activities lined out by members posts to celebrate the day in several ways and these include :
*High ranking officials in the industry make speeches of their achievements and challenges of the Postal System.
*Special Postage Stamps to commemorate the day is issued.
*In schools there could be special activities by the Philately clubs for children and students.
* Postal workers received rewards for recognition for outstanding performance.
*It is on this day that the winner of the UPU letter writing competition of the previous year 2018 are celebrated by the Director-General with Prizes who is the head of the organisation.

“Nigeria became a member of the UPU on the 10th of July, 1961.
In the year 2018,the Universal Postal Union has ranked Nigeria as the best performed African Postal Administration in 2018 using its unparalleled collection of Postal big data and statistics to create the ranking from 173 countries.

“The Postal Development Report measures four areas of development which are the four R’s – reliability, reach,relevance and resilience. Thus NIPOST is the certified 2018 Regional champion for Africa.

“The second annual ranking of Postal Operators which explored the relationship between a country’s Postal Development and its progress on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development indicators, Nigeria has an invaluable role in offer financial services which will positively impact on our national economies and help maximize growth potential for financial inclusion of the unbanked rural dwellers.

“The Nigerian Postal Service has launched a new product with a tripartite partnership between the Bankers Committee, Nigeria Incentive-based Risk-sharing System for Agricultural Lending( NIRSAL). The first seven branches are located in Abuja,Gwagwalada,Lokoja,Kaduna, Ibadan,Port Harcourt and Enugu.

“This relationship will serve millions of small entrepreneuers and small holder farmers in Nigeria, administered and disbursed bank’ s small and medium enterprises (SMES) funds.

Digital Address System is another product that is aimed at bridging the addressing gap in Nigeria. With a smart phone,an individual can get his digital address for free but to verify,it is not free. The Address verification system has to register with NIPOST for fee by logging on line.
