The dean of Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, has been suspended by the school authority for allegedly raping a 20-year-old 400-level student in his office.
Prof. Cyril Ndifon was suspended yesterday, September 10, by a panel set up by the school’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivara Esu to investigate him.
Ndifon, the first professor of Law from Cross River State, had been briefly arrested and detained by the police.
He was later released on Wednesday before his suspension on yesterday evening by the panel.
The professor had been accused by the girl’s mother, Irene Akpan of forcefully having sex with her daughter between 3 and 5pm on August 29 at his private office on the top floor of the faculty building.
The public relations officer of the university, Effiong Eyo, had earlier said the institution was seriously looking into the matter.
“A panel has been set up to look into the matter. The authorities are looking seriously into it,” Eyo said.
Confirming the incident, the state police public relations officer, Hogan Bassey, said: “The case of rape or sexual assault requires discreet investigation and we have to handle it with care.”
