Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has stated that those clamoring for the scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme do not mean well for Nigeria.

The Sultan stated this yesterday in his palace in Sokoto when the Batch A stream two corps members currently undergoing orientation exercise paid him a courtesy visit at the palace.

The traditional and religious leader explained that NYSC scheme was established to foster unity ,proper encouragement and development of common ties among Nigeria’s nationalities.

He said: “I heard that there is a bill to scrap the NYSC scheme at the National Assembly. Let me tell you, those behind that bill do not mean well for this country.”

The Sultan stated that NYSC scheme is most needed now as Nigeria is divided along ethnic and religious lines.

He welcomed the corps members posted to Sokoto State, stressing that the state is the most peaceful in Nigeria.

Abubakar further told them to take the state as their second home, enjoining them to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities.

He urged them to be security conscious, admitting that there are security challenges in some parts of the state, which he said the trend now is a global phenomenon.

“I urged you to be security conscious while staying in Sokoto. You know there is security challenges presently all over the world which we have our own share, so don’t keep late at night, and if you have any challenge, contact your district head because they are like your fathers and guardians,” he added.

The Sultan further implored leaders to speak out when things are going wrong, saying injustice must also be addressed to calm down tension and agitations in the country.

Earlier the state Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Philip Enaberue, thanked the Sultan for his unflinching support for the scheme in the state.

Enaberue further stated that as a tradition, they were in the palace to pay homage to Sultan and seek his fatherly advice.
