The senator said this in a tweet posted on Friday. Sani said if politicians are not able to declare their assets, they “can’t cast the first stone.” “Anyone among the ruling political elites who thinks of himself as a saint, should publicly declare his assets or have the courage to ask the code of conduct to publicly publish what he or she declared,” the lawmaker tweeted. “If you can’t,then you can’t cast the first stone by hiding your questionable wealth under official secrecy.”

The lawmaker’s remark is coming in the wake of the false assets declaration charges filed against Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN). The CJN was supposed to be arraigned at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Monday but he was absent. His lawyers have challenged the jurisdiction of the tribunal to entertain the matter. Before Onnoghen’s case, Senate President Bukola Saraki was also tried for false assets declaration. He eventually cleared his name when the matter got to the supreme court. Mixed reactions have trailed the charges filed against Onnoghen by the federal government. The timing — about a month to the polls — has been a contentious issue.]]>
