Many young attorneys want to attain the immediate status of some of the notable legal icons but are unaware that the rise to excellence cannot be fast-tracked.. Success in the legal profession does not happen by accident. A lawyer must maintain the requisite knowledge and skill and keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology and engage in continuing study and education. Also, excellence must not be jettisoned in spite of the overwhelming challenges in the profession or society. You can be a young lawyer and stand out among your colleagues ., There has been a steady decline in the standard of legal practice in Nigeria in yhe last four/five years. At various fora, Judges, senior lawyers and Silks have made chiding remarks on the quality of lawyers churned out from our law school; that these crop are nothing compared to the lawyers produced in the 60s, 70s and 80s when the likes of the legendary Chief Babatunde Abiodun Ibironke SAN was at the helm of affairs. It will be great disservice and an act of ingratitude to blame the present leadership of the law school or the lecturers or even the curriculum for the drop in standards. The stark reality is that the theories taught at the law schools, although fundamental, are but a nanoscopic glimpse of what a lawyer should expect in his thirty or more years of legal practice. The famous legal icon Late Chief Debo Akande (SAN) in his interview with THISDAY newspaper of Tuesday, April 17, 2004, said, “now the young ones want the fast lane! But we didn’t try the fast lane. I’m trying to write my biography, because time is going, before you know it, I’ll be 70.]]>
