Tell us about yourself? My name is AL-BASHIR LAWAL LIKKO, ESQ., Dip in Law, LL.B combined Hons., BL. LL.M in view. I’m a private Legal Practitioner based in Abuja. An Associate Partner to Nassir Abdu Dangiri, SAN. I have passion for Litigation. I’m the Secretary to Legislative Advocacy & Law Reform Committee ‘NBA National’ under the chairmanship of Chief Paul Erokoro, SAN. External Solicitor to Bank of Industry, Ja’iz Bank Plc, Hajnoor Investment Limited, Road Development Company Limited, Kul-Dwell Nigeria Limited, Saltor Universal Concept Limited, Likko Constructions & Development Company Limited among others. I’m Happily married to AISHA IBRAHIM BELLO, a Civil Servant. We are blessed with three children, AHMAD, JALEELAH & AYMAN. What area (s) of law interests you? I like Litigation, Case management, Advocacy, Commercial Law, Competition Law, Consumer Law, Islamic Law, Arbitration among others Why do you choose to be a lawyer? In my opinion is the best profession… When a Lawyer stands as a minister in a temple of justice whether in the Bar or Bench he/she is representing the whole world. What is your most critical time in practice you had to deal with? My critical time was when I started after successfully called to the Bar, I have already made up my mind that, I will never work in a Law firm on salary arraignment, rather prepared to learn the rudiment of the Law and build my clientele, which really worked for me. The hard way, the successful way to me. What do you feel are things that help a person become successful in practice? In my view, Honesty/ Trustworthiness, hard work, Patience, Humbleness, above all submissive to the will of God through constants prayers… What kinds of things give you the most satisfaction in your work? Rendering pro bono service to indigent people, that was what prompted me to apply to the CG of Prison to allowed me carry some pro bono services in Kuje prison and Kurmawa prison in Kano State. Discussing legal issues with legal luminaries, reading sound judgements delivered by eloquent justices. Where are you looking out for area of specialization and why? Consumer Law/ Competition Law. Because these areas are very dry in Nigeria we need more expert in the area. While many lawyers don’t know, most lawyers are looking at Oil and Gas law thinking that it’s an area where a solicitor will make a lot of money. The money you will make in Competition Law/ Consumer Law is more than that as an expert… My opinion… What are your outside interests and hobbies?‎ Politics, Business, Teaching, meaningful discussion with colleagues, staying and chatting with my wife and kids, Researching and Surfing the Internet. ‎Have you ever benefited from your ‎disappointment/mistakes? Yes of course, I once charged a client to pay me 10% percent for professional fees, to prepare a deed of Assignment and Power of Attorney, the client insisted to pay me a token I vehemently rejected it, before he left, he said he will meet those Lawyers in business centres they will do it for him less than that among, I said good luck to him. After a year or two same client came to my office and briefed me, while I charged him and he eventually paid without hesitation, I asked him why he smiled and said, he later agreed with me there are different type of Lawyers. He confessed to me that I’m not a JAMBOREE LAWYER, he trusted me and he understood why the professional fee. The services are never the same. Could you tell us your experience as a young lawyer ‎ I once called my case out of turn before a judge in Kaduna and it was successful… Outside jurisdiction… While here in Abuja in a Magistrates court one day I was in court patiently waiting when one Lawyer called his case out of turn bragging he was the most Senior counsel, the Magistrate asked him when was he call he said 1996. Another lawyer stood up and said my friend take your seat, I was call 1988, that very day people in the court had their time for free laugh, from then I never tried that… To avoid any embarrassment. Who has been most influential in your life? My late father Alh. LAWAL LIKKO, he was my first teacher. He always told us that, for you to succeed in life you must be Honest at all times, be humble and Knowledge is the bedrock of all achievement. I now really understand his words of wisdom. My Immediate young brother is a Ph.D holder Dr. GIDADO LAWAL LIKKO, lecturer, Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State, all as a result of the influence of our father. That is why i stepped into his shoes and make sure that all my siblings got that training. Presently, my younger brother whom I trained is an Engr. B.Mech. and also a potential ASP in person of Engr. Rabi’u and another brother too trained by my humble self is Anas who recently completed his Bar finals in the Nigerian Law School, Bwari Abuja. Your word of encouragement to upcoming lawyers‎‎?‎ They should know what they really want. Decide on what to do in life. They should not waste their time on people that add no value to their life. They should always Identify people that will add value to their life and go to them, meet with them, reward them. To me, for a young person to succeed he/she must earn a real respect to himself/herself by understanding the following and put them into practice. Stand for something, Take action, Self-accountability, Ignore your fears and Expect mistakes. Lastly, decide on what you want to do don’t waste time, always focus on what you want don’t do many things at a time. Be proactive… ]]>
