The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) has fixed October 15, for the conduct of local government elections in the state.
The Chairman of OSIEC, Barrister Segun Oladitan, disclosed this yesterday while briefing newsmen in Osogbo.
He also raised alarm that he had been receiving threatening messages over plans to conduct the elections.
He said the electoral body was aware of the Electoral Act 2022 (amended) and assured that it would not run afoul of the law in conducting the polls.
He, therefore, appealed to political stakeholders in the state who disagree with the commission’s position to seek redress in court instead of resorting to threats.
Oladitan said, “So, I want to appeal to members of the public that there’s nothing we are doing today that is new. If anybody disagrees with what I’m doing, they should not attack me physically.”
Meanwhile, the chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the state, Tosin Odeyemi, commended OSIEC for its comprehensive plan to conduct the elections, saying the party was fully ready to participate in the exercise.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), through a statement issued by its chairman in the state, Dr Akindele Adekunle, said OSIEC’s plan to go ahead with the exercise was illegal.
