The Osun State House of Assembly has commenced consideration of the Osun State Multi-Door Court Establishment Bill, 2024, which seeks to provide opportunities for alternative dispute resolution.

A statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Assembly, Olamide Tiamiyu, obtained in Osogbo on Tuesday, described the bill as “a landmark move aimed at reforming the judicial system in the state.”

Providing further insight into the bill sponsored by lawmaker Mr. Femi Popoola, the statement explained that when passed, it would assist in the implementation of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, thereby reducing the burden on courts and enhancing more timely and effective justice delivery for the people.

Presenting key policy objectives of the bill at the plenary, Popoola said it has the potential to provide diverse options for dispute resolution, including mediation, arbitration, and conciliation.

His position was supported by fellow assembly members, who recognised the bill’s capacity to empower individuals to select the most suitable method for their unique circumstances.

The initiative is designed to tackle the issue of case backlogs that have long plagued the judicial system, fostering amicable resolutions to conflicts and ultimately contributing to a more harmonious society,” the statement partly read.

Addressing the parliament, the Speaker, Mr. Adewale Egbedun, who highlighted the importance of the bill, noted that “it aligns with global best practices in judicial administration and reflects a commitment to modernising the state’s legal framework.

“As Osun State moves forward with this initiative, it is anticipated that the establishment of multi-door courts will lead to a more efficient and responsive judiciary, enhancing access to justice for all citizens.”

He added that the “introduction of the Osun State Multi-Door Court Establishment Bill is seen as a significant step towards improving the legal landscape in the region, and stakeholders are optimistic about its potential.”
