Dr. Ajibola Basiru, the Senator representing Osun Senatorial District, has unveiled a new constituency office. In a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL), the Senator describes the event as “very significant because two of the cardinal pacts of my campaign in the run-up to the election that brought me into office as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are being fulfilled by this event.”

According to the Senator, the event of his unveiling the office was the first Town Hall meeting where he shall give an account of his stewardship at the Senate based on his first six months as their representative at the Senate.

The Senator says without a corresponding office located within Osun Central, he will almost be completely cut off from his constituents on whose wings he is flying.

“In order to avoid any form of disconnect from my constituents, I deemed it honourable and necessary to set up a constituency office where my constituents can easily reach me. It is my duty and it is thus incumbent on me to be accessible and available at all times to my constituents and assist in proffering solutions to their challenges the best way I can.” the Senator says

According to the Senator, it will assist him in:

“• Improved representation of the people of the Osun Central Senatorial District in the Senate as a liaison office;
• Meeting with constituents on a regular basis;
• Provide service to individual constituents in their dealings with government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
The Osun Central Senatorial District Office is designed along with its satellite offices in the ten Local Government Areas that make up the Osun Senatorial District as a one–stop shop to handle constituents’ needs.Therefore, constituents inquiries, questions and even feedbacks can be adequately addressed at the Senatorial office or in any of the offices in the ten Local Government Areas.”

He added that dedicated staff have been engaged to address constituent concerns.

The Senator says as a first timer in the Senate he was appointed as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Diaspora, Non-Governmental Organisations and Civil Societies and also member of the following Committees:

“i. Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters;
ii. Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream);
iii. Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream); and
iv. Committee on Airforce.
v. Committee on States and Local Governments
Within the same period.”

He has so far sponsored the following Bills that have direct and pivotal bearing on the people of his Senatorial District:

1 A Bill for an Act to provide for the Establishment of the Federal College of Education, Ila Orangun, Osun State and for other Matters connected therewith, the Bill seeks to upgrade the Osun State College of Education, Ila Orangun to the status of a Federal College of Education. The reason for the introduction of this Bill stems from the fact that there are Federal institutions already in the East and West Senatorial Districts of the State and, it is only charitable and of utmost necessity that the Osun Central Senatorial District should have the presence of the Federal Government in the form of a Federal Institution through the upgrade of the Osun State College of Education at Ila Orangun..
2 A Bill for an Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to provide for the establishment of state police and to ensure effective community policing in Nigeria and for matters connected thereto, 2019; and
3 A Bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to provide for the establishment of the Political Parties Registration and Regulation Commission and for related matters, 2019.

He says the first two Bills have passed 1st Reading at the Senate and hopefully, legislative processes on the bills will be completed in due time.

He mentioned some bills which are in the process of being processed for further legislative action;

1 A Bill for an Act to provide the legal framework to Establish Federal Medical Centre Osogbo, Osun State and for Related Matters;
2 A Bill for an Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to regulate the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, and for related matter, 2019.

Senator Ajibola also made reference to his petition on the abandonment of the Osogbo Steel Rolling Company and the Nigeria Machine Tools Limited wherein he appealed for their rehabilitation” signed by Engineer Maruf Bolarinwa and Elder Adewale Adewumi.

He said as part of his electioneering campaign, promises to pursue the issues of food security and the provision of portable water to make life easier for the people of Osun Central, he has within six months of his tenure completed six bore holes out of which three have been commissioned and are already dispensing water for the respective communities where they are constructed. Further efforts are being put in place to achieve other promises. Furthermore, he is in the process of setting up a Youth and Students’Council to assist in political conscientization, engagement, education and mobilization of the youths as active players in governance and democratic process.

He concluded by appreciating the All Progressives Congress for the opportunity to be the flagbearer of the Party in the last Senatorial election, but cautions however that “we should be wary of elements of divisive tendencies as contentious issues will not guarantee success for our Party at any election. We must learn to work as a team and forge in unity if we are to consolidate on the gains of democracy that our people deserve.”

He then recognized some distinguished individuals and some of party faithfuls.

“It is on this note that I recognise the contributions and efforts of our National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Baba Bisi Akande and Ogbeni Rauf AdesojiAregbesola for their untiring efforts at building the Party.
On this note, I urge all Party faithfuls to rally in support of Governor Gboyega Oyetola so that we can have more meaningful development in the State of Osun.

“I Thank you all and wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year in advance.”
