Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has demanded immediate retraction and apology from the office of the Vice Chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria, Abdallah Adamu, over a comment credited to him that Obasanjo earns N40, 000 annually as a facilitator in the University.
In a statement made available, Wednesday, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo said the comment was embarrassing, uncharitable, mischievous and in bad taste.
The former President said that he had never received any dime either as salaries or otherwise from the university and not planning for such now or forever as his service was offered pro bono ab initio.
The statement read in part, “Ordinarily, this would have been unnecessary exercise, if it had been the usual shenanigans of the media to sell their newspapers, but, the very clear quotation of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abdallah Adam on the headline made this clarification imperative and to set the records straight on His Excellency’s engagement with the University.
“In putting the records in the right perspective, His Excellency wishes to draw the attention of the Vice-Chancellor to his letter dated 12 April, 2018, which was written to the university registrar, Mr. Felix Edoka, when the Council offered him a Part-Time appointment as an Instructional/Tutorial Facilitator and Project Supervisor in the Faculty of Arts at the Abeokuta Study Centre.
“Specifically in Paragraph 3 of the letter, President Obasanjo wrote: “I will gladly undertake any of the functions mentioned in paragraph two of your letter pro bono and I hope that the functions will be flexible enough to accommodate my rather tight schedule.”
“The publication, which has generated mixed reactions from the general public and calls from far and near on the Elder statesman expressing concern, is to say the least, embarrassing, uncharitable, mischievous and in bad taste, with immediate demand for a retraction and apology from the Office of the Vice Chancellor.”
According to an offer of part time appointment addressed to Obasanjo and dated 15th February, 2018, a copy of which was obtained by Daily Independent, the former President was offered a two year appointment with allowances quoted in the letter.
The letter signed by the Registrar, Edoka offered Obasanjo N5, 000 allowance per hour subject to other conditions which included 5 hours for 1 credit, 8 hours for 2 credit course, 12 hours for 3 credit course and 16 hours for 4 credit course.
On project supervision, Obasanjo was also to earn N5, 000 per project for an undergraduate, N3, 500 for PGD, N7, 500 for Masters and N10, 500 for PhD.
He was also offered N500, 000 for Practicum/Teaching Service Practice Supervision per student and N200 per script for marking of exams.
But in his own response dated 12th April, 2018, a copy of which was also obtained by Daily Indepdent, Obasanjo specifically stated in paragraph 3 of the letter that he would be taking up the offer on pro bono.
He stated, “I will gladly undertake any of the functions mentioned in paragraph two of your letter pro bono and I hope that the functions will be flexible enough to accommodate my rather tight schedule.”
