Olomofe was said to have been attacked and beaten to stupor by hoodlums in the premises of the Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Border post on 25th of June 2015. Alhaji Waheed Odusil, National President of NUJ said at a media briefing in Lagos that “effort has been made from our part to find out those involved in the act, we can’t say precisely who was behind the attack, but we know that it took place within the premises of the Nigeria Customs Service at Seme Border post.” He said the Customs had agreed that they would investigate the matter while it was also reported to the Police because Olomofe almost lost his life then. “We are not imputing any motive yet because we expect the investigation to prove who actually was behind it, but the management of the Nigeria Customs Service then promised to contact the NUJ at the national level and up till now, we did not hear anything from them. The Police made some moves to investigate the matter, to ascertain who was behind it, but I believe the matter got stalked somewhere,” he said. “Why and how, we couldn’t know.It over six months since it happened and we were hoping the Police and the NCS agency would have find out what happened so that we can resolve this matter. “There was also some third party intervention to ensure the matter was resolved, but as at today nothing has been heard from the other side. So we have decided to fish out the culprit because we can’t fold hands and let the matter die just like that. So we contacted our lawyer to take the matter to court.” He said the move was to enforce the fundamental human right to life, dignity of the person and freedom expression and the press between Applicant: Yomi Olomofe and nine respondents including, Comptroller of Customs Mohammed Dalati, Assistant Comptroller of Custom Ibrahim Duaki, and the entire customs service. According to Barrister Jiti Ogunye, NUJ lawyer, “We will continue to partner with Nigerian Journalists, the case of Otunba Yomi Olomofe was a shock to many Nigerians including journalists, not so because journalists are not been harassed even now by those who are in authority, but because it was a very disturbing this action carried under the auspices of the Nigeria Customs men at the border and he would have been killed in the process. “Between that time and now, lots had happened. Olomofe had to recuperate, if not fully psychologically, but at least physically. But the NUJ for proper advice had to accept there should be a waiting period to enable him recuperate. “We file a five hundred million naira fundamental right enforcement suit at the federal high court, principally because the agent of state under whose instructor that bastardly acts was carried out are federal agent and therefore the federal high court has the requisite jurisdiction to entertain a matters like this. And those agent including the Nigeria Customs have been sue in conjunction with the private individuals and their thugs that inflicted brutal injustice to Mr. Omolofe.”]]>
