Founder of Abel Damina Ministries International (ADMI), Dr. Abel Damina, has ignited a new wave of controversy with his latest sermon, boldly declaring that church offerings and tithes are not given to God but are spent by men.
In a viral video clip from a recent Sunday service, the Akwa Ibom-based pastor challenged traditional Christian beliefs, stating unequivocally:
“No offering goes to heaven; men spend it every time we gather offerings in this church. All the offerings we give to God go to men.”
Known for his unorthodox theology and frequent critique of mainstream church practices, Damina has never shied away from expressing views that many church leaders would consider controversial. In January 2025, he sparked outrage by teaching that smoking and drinking are not sins within Christian doctrine.
During the sermon that has stirred renewed debate, Damina accused some pastors of manipulating their congregants by misrepresenting the purpose of tithes and offerings.
“Even those tithe mongers that say when you pay tithe, the doors of heaven will open — the doors have been open since Jesus rose from the dead. They’ve never been closed. They are just working on people’s minds,” he said.
Responding to criticism from other clerics, Damina maintained that his position is grounded in biblical understanding and transparency.
“I heard some of them saying I am evil because I said you should not pay tithe, that ‘he and his children would pay tithe’. He has to talk like that to keep collecting from people,” he said. “People won’t keep giving him if he doesn’t talk like that.”
He further alleged that many church leaders who advocate tithing often do not practice what they preach.
