Nigerian Copyright Commission NCC DG John Asein

The Nigerian Copyright Commission has inaugurated the Special Copyright Inspectors whom it said would complement the enforcement efforts of its regular inspectors, Punch report.

At the event which held in Abuja, the Director-General of the NCC, Mr John Asein, said the members of the Governing Board of the commission conferred with the new roles, would be followed with the investiture of more competent volunteers in no distant time.

In a statement on Wednesday, the NCC, through its media contact person, Mr Vincent Oyefeso, Asein said with only 13 offices in the entire country of 36 states, it was clear that the commission was in dire need of the contributions of non-members of staff of the commission, who are the regular Copyright Inspectors.

Asein added, “One of the things that is taking away the wealth of this nation is piracy.

“In fighting piracy, we need to widen and enlarge our reach. The first point of call is to ensure that every stakeholder is enlisted in this fight.

“Members of the Governing Board of the Commission would be the first to be made the Special Copyright Inspectors.

“We want to ensure that that the anti-piracy drive will be enhanced not just by the regular members of staff who are the regular Copyright Inspector but by volunteers who are passionate about copyright issues.”

Also speaking, the Director of Enforcement of the NCC, Mr Augustine Amodu said Section 38(1) of the Copyright Act gives a copyright inspector the power to arrest and ensure the prosecution of offenders.

Amodu likened the Special Copyright Commission to the Special Road Marshal engaged by the Federal Road Safety Corps to complement the enforcement efforts of the corps.

The Chairman of the NCC’s Governing Board, Mr Toney Jaja, assured the public that the results of the initiatives being put in place by the commission would soon be felt.
