* Decries Nonchalant Attitude By Police Over Killings * Proposes Escalation Of The Issue To IGP The Chairman of the Port-Harcourt Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has raised a brow on why the EFCC organizes Paid-Conferences for Judges. This was raised at the NBA-NEC meeting held at the NBA Secretariat, Abuja. The NEC after a careful observation of the issue raised, said that Judicial Officers should be warned not to take bananas from the Commission. The Council saw no reason why the anti-graft agency will be hosting judges and paying them, thereafter. Perhaps, what must have informed the reaction is the fact that the Commission is a prosecutor of financial-related crimes, whose appearance is to be announced and entered before the same men of the bench. NEC members further call for action over the harassment of lawyers by law enforcement agencies. NEC raised this issue following the alarming cases of lawyers been brutalized by policemen in the course of doing their duties in different parts of the Country. In the same vain, the Council decried the nonchalant attitude of Police to their duties. The Council cited the case of a lawyer who was kidnapped and killed in Ekiti State. According to them, the place where the ungodly act was perfected is known to be notorious for such acts, and yet, the Police acted indifferent towards the gruesome act. It was therefore resolved that the NBA be tasked to escalate the issue to the Inspector General of Police. Also, the NEC tasked the NBA to come up with a policy to arrest the tide of clients presenting already drafted Deed for the sale of property worth over N5m to lawyers to frank and pay the lawyer N5k. The aim is to channel practice to far-reaching realities of the times.]]>
