Anthony Atata’s closing speech at the just-concluded NBA Lagos manifesto has excited many female and young lawyers in the Nigerian Bar Association Lagos branch.

At the end of the Manifesto which lasted for about four hours, the moderator asked Anthony Atata why he thought himself to be the best candidate for the position of the Chairman.
He responded that he acknowledges the fact that many members of the branch will be on a spot in trying to make a choice because the three candidates in the race are good candidates. However, he pointed out that he is the only candidate who has contemporary issues in his manifesto.
According to Atata, apart from the issue of welfare, Technology and Bar & Bench which all the candidates are talking about, he is the only one pursuing the issues of sexual harassment &bullying in the Legal profession and Mental health of Lawyers.
Anthony Atata who served as the IBA Chair for Africa was involved in the working group that conducted the survey on Sexual harassment and Bullying in the legal profession. The recommendations from the study are presently being applied globally.
He promised to localize the recommendations when he is elected NBA Lagos Chair.
He also said that one of the reasons why the branch should elect him is that while he has started pursing his goals already, his co-contestants are waiting to be elected before taking steps.
It can be recalled that Anthony Atata has been at the forefront of the conversation on sexual harassment and bullying in the legal profession and was a top speaker on the subject at the workshop of the African Women Lawyers Association in commemoration of International women’s day 2021.
He also flew to London on the Launch of the survey a few years ago and was active in supporting bar associations across Africa to implement the recommendations.
At the dawn of the lockdown, Mr Atata wrote a recommendation on what the Nigerian courts can take from the UK Coronavirus act so that the courts will not be completely shut down.
The election will now hold on the 30th of June 2021.
