Information reaching TheNigerialawyer (TNL) reveals that the Ikorodu branch of Nigeria Bar Association has not set up any Caretaker committee and the NBA General Secretary, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagungu has instructed them not to conduct the election until further notice. TNL was also informed that the current vice chairman and the treasurer both of whom are contesting for the position of the chairman of the branch are 2 out of 5 who petitioned the national body concerning the elections. As a result of the petitions, the National General Secretary has put a hold on all election processes throwing the branch into a messy situation as the current excos were due to leave office on June 12, in a bid to not overstay without the new excos on ground. We also gathered that the chairman of the branch attempted to ensure that elections be held on the 8th of June while the AGM was to hold on the 12th but this was again thwarted when the chairman of the electoral committee apparently received some threats and was misinformed about the coming of the GS to the branch. Based on this incidences, the chairman of the EC refused to go ahead with the elections on the 8th of June. Source further informed TheNigerialawyer that the chairman of the branch has to postpone the AGM after receiving communication from the national secretariat but the vice chair, treasurer and the PRO went ahead to convene a meeting at a near by bear parlour. Following all the issues branches are having here and there, the Nigerian Bar Association General Secretary, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju and the Branches Electoral Monitoring Committee (BEMC) will be meeting with NBA Ikorodu EXCOs, the electoral committee, the petitioners and any interested persons from Ikorodu, the Ikeja branch (Tiger Bar) and Badagry branch on Thursday, 14th June, 2018. The Committee (BEMC) will meet with Ikorodu branch by 4 pm, while Badagry is by 2pm and Ikeja branch to be held by 6pm. The venue is Ikeja bar centre. The committee expects maximum cooperation from everyone as they assure all, that they shall give full effect to the clear provisions of the constitution in this regard. Letters to this effect shall get to all concerned today. In another development, the chairman of the branch, Mr. Levi C. Adikwaone Esq Chairman has released a press statement containing some of the events that transpired that eventually led to the adjournment of the AGM which ought to have been held. The press release contains events that led to the suspension of the branch election and the constitution of the monitoring committees for the branches as well as that the facts finding report expected from the committee coupled with the reason for the delay in giving the report amongst others. Below is the Press Release by the Chairman: Distinguished gentlemen of the Branch, on Monday, 4th June 2018 the Branch Electoral Committee informed the Branch of its readiness to conduct the Branch election on Friday, 8th June, 2018 following the directive of the Branch Executive Council/Committee. However, by its official release, the Chairman of the Branch Electoral Committee advised that the proposed election would no longer hold due to “official communication from the National Body to the effect that our Branch election scheduled for Friday 8th June, 2018 should be put on hold”, and that a new date shall be communicated in due course. By a letter dated 6th June 2018 and circulated online, the General Secretary of NBA, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju informed the NBA Community that the President of NBA, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, OON, SAN has set up Branches Elections Monitoring Committee (BEMC) to decisively address the incessant disputes emanating from NBA Branches over elections into various offices. Consequently, all such Branches affected were directed to suspend further preparations towards its election pending the final determination of the pending petitions. The directive further enjoins all Electoral Committees of the various NBA Branches including but not limited to Ikorodu to adhere strictly to this directive. Following the constitution of the Branches Elections Monitoring Committees, (BEMC), especially the South West Zone, and the fact that they were given 7days from 6th June 2018 to turn in their reports, I quickly contacted the Team Leader/Chairman of the South-West Team to ascertain when they would be coming to Ikorodu considering the fact that the Branch AGM cum swearing-in new Officers had been fixed for Tuesday, 12th June 2018. He advised that his Committee was not yet in the position to advise when his team would come to Ikorodu because they were yet to be mobilized and armed with relevant guidelines and terms of reference. He therefore advised the necessity to adjourn our further activities till end of June to enable their mobilization and conclusion of assignment. Other major concerns are the fact that Lagos State Government has declared Tuesday, 12th June 2018 a Public Holiday; and the audit report has not been concluded. Against the foregoing, and other factors boarding on logistics, it has become absolutely and practically expedient to inform the good people of this noble branch that: The branch election, AGM and swearing of the new officers must be postponed till another date but certainly in June 2018 to give meaning and effect to the directive of the President of NBA as communicated through the General Secretary of NBA, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju (online) on 6th June, 2018 to the Branch, and other affected Branches of NBA. The AGM fixed for Tuesday, 12th June 2018 is hereby adjourned until the conclusion of the intervention by Branches Elections Monitoring Committee (BEMC), after which a new date for election, AGM and swearing of the new officers would be announced. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Signed Levi C. Adikwaone Esq Chairman.” We will continue to bring you the news as it breaks from NBA Ikorodu branch.]]>
