* NBA Annual General Conference 2017: A Brave Departure from the norm The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference (AGC) is one of the pillars of the Association, the highest decision making body of the NBA and a much looked forward to event and gathering by the entire membership of the NBA. However, the conferences over the years have not met the expectations of most of participants in terms of quality and delivery of conference packaging and resources. A Daniel has come to judgment this 2017 as the Administration for #ABraveNewBar is putting together a 2017 NBA Annual General Conference that is “A Brave Departure from the norm”. Professor Konyisola Ajayi, SAN, Chairman, Technical Committee on National Conference Planning (TCCP), said this much when he told the recently concluded National Executive Committee Meeting (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) which held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 in Lokoja, Kogi State that the forthcoming conference would do away with conference bags, give jobs to lawyers, reposition the Bar, enhance the present infrastructure and equip it to drive the vision for #ABraveNewBar as well as restore confidence and respect to lawyers locally and globally. Over 10,000 lawyers would be equipped with electronic Tablets worth about N250,000.oo each, loaded with relevant legal and research applications, Law Pavilion Electronic Law Reports (LPELR) with subscription for one full year, amongst other benefits and this would be delivered to lawyers immediately upon registration for the conference; regardless of the category of the Registration; and even if before the commencement of the conference. This effectively cures most of the issues surrounding the inadequate provision for and collection of conference materials at the venue of the conference, which has bugged the AGC for years. The 2017 AGC also boasts a rich retinue of facilitators, both local and international and would provide Nigerian lawyers brave new opportunities for global networking, knowledge exchange, business interactions, international synergies and partnerships/alliances, capacity building and continuing professional development on new areas of law especially, as well as provide a roundtable opportunity for interactions on other issues of national importance, exchange of ideas and experiences that will open up business opportunities for a majority of Nigerian lawyers. The facilitators include the Former Prime Minister of Georgia who is known for institution capacity building, and other experts in the legal, business and technical development areas. Other facilities that would be available during the conference, include teams of Medical Personnel who would provide free health screening on major health challenges amongst the young and old, including but not limited to cancer, especially prostate cancer, heart disease, cervical cancer and hypertension, etc. Buttressing the essence of the sharp departure from the norm, Professor Konyisola Ajayi, SAN stated that the theme of the Conference is; “African Business: Penetrating through Institution building.” He clarified further that, African businesses require the provision of excellent legal services, and these services can only be provided by the appropriate legal institutions. He noted further, we see each lawyer as an institution and each law firm as a broader institution, hence we have carefully drawn up a programme that will address the growth of these institutions to enable them meet the challenges of businesses in the 21st century as well as selected speakers to address the conference in this regard. The 2017 Conference is geared towards positioning the Nigerian Lawyer and Law Firm at every level for global competitiveness in the highly digitalised 21st century. The Conference would also be digitally enhanced, and streamed live on a dedicated DSTV channel so that the world can see the activities of the NBA live, enhance the global platform for NBA participation in international affairs, and even those that may not be able to attend would watch it on global digital satellite television. This years’ Conference would also cater to the needs of Lawyers, especially young lawyers who are disadvantaged as the TCCP has put in place a plan to give out about 500 free tickets to these disadvantaged delegates. The Conference is holding at the EKO Hotel, Lagos Nigeria and Hotel Accommodations for the conference at highly discounted rates have been arranged in several hotels within the mainland and the Island. This is a Brave New Conference and one to be attended by everyone. CONFERENCE FEE LEVEL Early. Mid.
