The Conference Costs for the 2019 Annual Conference is expected to be reviewed by one of the subcommittees of the Technical Committee for Conference Planning (TCCP), the Finance and Fundraising Sub Committee. This was contained in the Report delivered by the Committee at the National Executive Committee meeting held at the NBA Secretariat on the 28th March 2019.  According to the Report, the Conference costs for the 2018 AGC remains, pending the review.

In the Report which contains two minutes of the Committee, Terms of reference, procedural manual, and TCCP Update list, the Committee highlighted the steps taken so far by the Committee to achieve a successful conference.

The report showed a breakdown of the conference Cost for last year.

1- 5 years is to pay N25,000 for early bird, N40,000 for regular fee and N60,000 for late fee.

For 6-10 years, N35,000 for early bird, N50,000 for regular, and N80,000 for late fee.

11-15 years has N50,000 for early bird, N65,000 for regular, and N90,000 for late fee. For 16-20 years, N70,000 for early bird, N85,000 for regular, and N100,000 for late fee, while for 20 years, N100,000 for early bird, N250,000 for regular and N150,000 for late registration.

For Senior Advocates, AGs and benchers, N250,000 goes for all.

The Report shows that the chairman constituted four (4) sub-committees to be responsible for different areas crucial to the realization of the TCCP’s mandate. The sub committees include The Financial and Fund Raising Sub-Committee, The Technical Sub-Committee, The Content Sub-Committee, and The Local Organizing Sub-committee. The Report discloses that in line with the tradition of the NBA, the 2019 Annual General Conference is proposed to hold from Friday 23rd to Thursday, 29th of August, 2019; the slight change to the tradition, however, is that on account of the unavailability of the Eko Hotels Convention Centre’s full capacity on Sunday 25th, it is being proposed that the opening ceremony be moved to Monday 26th.

The theme of the Conference is said to be, “Facing the Future of Law”, with other Sub themes and session topics which include, “Advocacy Practice and The Future; Diversity and Inclusion for better Future; Future of Young Lawyer, Administration of Justice, Time for a Disruptor (managing change), Judiciary: Conservative or Change Averse;  Multilateral and Bilateral  Trade Agreements – Predicting the Future (future Trends), Unliterary System in a Federation – Success of Failure, Today Shapes Our Future; Change Shapes our Future; Nigerian Legal Regulatory Environment: Facilitator or a Clog to the Use of it?, Technology as Facilitator of Justice Administration, I Follow My Client – Movement of Lawyer Within Africa, Embracing Emerging Technologies for Service Delivery, Leveraging Technology In Justice Administration, Managing Change and Transformation In your Practice, Retention, Retention, Emerging Practice Areas, Practice and Procedure.

Eko Hotels, Lagos has been chosen as the venue while Harbor Point, which is the not far from the venue has been fixed for some of the breakdown sessions, exhibition, registration, friendship centre and Mami Market, as Eventful Nigeria Limited is expected to handle management requirements of the AGC.

TNL gathered that H.E. Paul Kagame (President of Rwanda), H.E. Cypril Ramaphosa (President of South Africa), Richard Susskinf, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo (President of Ghana) are all selected as Keynote speakers, as the TCCP guided by the Content Sub-committee will shortlist speakers and discussants for the breakdown sessions and discussion sessions at the Conference. The Report also shows that the TCCP has identified a list of sponsors.

Speaking briefly on the theme of the Conference, the reports state that the Conference will interrogate current legal regulatory environment, lawyers’ response to technology and preparedness to harness these tools for efficient legal services delivery and a technology driven judiciary.

Indeed, the legal community is waiting patiently for the first Conference to be organized under the Paul Usoro, SAN led administration. It is the expectations of lawyers that this edition comes out as a bumper edition.
