Embattled former Nigerian wrestler, John Uti also known as “Power Uti” is now languishing in prison custody while awaiting lègal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution ( DPP ).
At the resumed hearinģ in the case Wednesday, Uti was not produced in Court by prison authorities. His bail conditions have not been fulfilled because his relations did not come for him.
Uti is alleged to have beaten his wife Toyin Uti, to death, and abandoned her body at their residence, 17, Oremeji Street, Ilupeju, Lagos, on October 10, 2017.
Uti, who reigned in wrestling world in the 80s to 90s, is facing a two-count charge of murder and negligence.
The magistrate granted a N500,000 bail and sent Uti’s case file to the director of public prosecution for legal advice.
Barrister Endurance Nkenchor, lawyer to Uti said that his client didn’t beat any body.
“Just that when the wife was sick the in-laws alleged that he rushed the wife to the church instead of hospital.
“They also alleged that when she finally died he took the corpse to the hospital and doctors confirm the wife dead, instead of depositing the corpse in the mortuary, the in-laws alleged that he took the corpse back home and then to a church and started praying to revive the corpse.
“He was also given a miracle mantle and since he didn’t have money, he took it home and the corpse was in that state for more than 24 hours in which the corpse got swollen, that is why they alleged that he didn’t treat the corpse decently.”
